Meditating on the parking lot that used to be a fi

Meditating on the parking lot that used to be a field of strawberries

You were great once.
Full of red splendor, reaching
up toward the sun, your leaves
waving in the wind,
crawling to and fro.
Your roots knew no bounds.

A random field full of the sweetest
items nature would allow,
bursting, juicy, eye-catching
as drivers rode by.

Top-down, California sunshine,
rows and rows of them,
a picture of God's abundance
not so readily seen these days.

But one day the field was no more. Now covered by the deepest black asphalt that ever existed,
sucking down and in heat, baking
everything good from the world.
No more red splendor.

No more plenty.
No more vines reaching.
No more than a normal thing,
a parking lot.

But give it time. Someday,
when the business moves on,
and cars no longer come,
the strawberry field will fulfill
its promise, that it will be forever.

If you know anything about nature,
it always reclaims, always
shows itself, despite human meddling,
and the asphalt will crack
because they couldn’t uproot
the seeds, only cover them.

And the strawberries will push through,
and we’ll be reminded
that something within us

can always come back to life, again.
